Episode 83

Lessons from the Becoming the Big Me: The Great Conquest Book- Gratitude

In today's episode of the Becoming the Big Me Podcast, Djemilah dives into the power of gratitude. The power of gratitude is not a new topic to this show, however after the writing and compiling of her next book, Becoming the Big Me: The Great Conquest, Djemilah was taught again about how incredibly powerful this concept truly is.

In her up and coming book Djemilah interviewed and spoke with many incredible individuals who have overcome incredible things. From addiction, PTSD, and loss of loved ones all of the contributors had this common thread of the ability to find gratitude even in the darkest of moments.

Unknown Speaker 0:57

Hello, my dear friends Djemilah Birnie here with becoming the big me. And today I am so excited

Unknown Speaker 1:06

to talk to you about

Unknown Speaker 1:10

something that I like a concept that I've talked to you guys about before, but a concept that just keeps being reminded to me of how absolutely important it is.

Unknown Speaker 1:23

And I don't know if you can hear the background sound right now or not. But I am sitting outside in my garden, I actually like decided to take my computer and my microphone out here. And it is the middle of the night is completely dark out here. But the reason why I wanted to do this episode out here, like this is because of the topic of this episode. And the topic of this episode is gratitude. And for me, being with nature, being outside, listening to the sounds of the night, there's something that I find so much gratitude, and in and it's not some big grandiose thing, it's not some big crazy thing, it's just really tuning in and being present with the moment and tuning in and being present with my surroundings and, and being grateful for all of those things. And if you have been around the becoming the big me universe for any amount of time, then then you know that gratitude is something that we talk about often.

Unknown Speaker 2:50

Gratitude is so, so powerful and and I know that it has had so much influence and power over my own life as far as allowing me to keep moving forward even in the midst of the darkness even in the midst of the scariness or that the hard times right and

Unknown Speaker 3:13

what

Unknown Speaker 3:16

what having gratitude has allowed me to do is to just keep putting one foot in front of the other even during those times when I didn't think that I could. But something that I have realized in the process of compiling my next book, The becoming the big me the great conquest book, which is actually releasing so soon you guys can go to the great conquest calm To find out more information about that. But something that I learned on the journey of compiling this book, as I was interviewing all of these different people, you know, from the walks of Sharon lechter, to Nick Wingo, to Dr. Francis Malone to all of these amazing, incredible people who have done and accomplished so much but they have also all been through so much. They've all been through obstacles, they've all been through darkness and and what I wanted to know is, what is what's the separator, what is the separator between the people who

Unknown Speaker 4:27

who are able to take the heaviness of the world who are able to take the most challenging the most difficult situations?

Unknown Speaker 4:38

What is what is the difference between the people that are able to take that and use it as fuel and use it as power and energy? What is the difference maker between those people and the ones that allow those those situations to stop them in their tracks? You know, I'm I can relate to this with my own story because

Unknown Speaker 5:00

I was in a situation where, you know, nobody would have blamed me if I gave up. Right? Everyone expected me to give up, just statistically speaking, at 17 years old, having using heroin, having been in the situation that I was in, there was absolutely no real logical reason for me to succeed. So what was the difference maker and what I realized, this common thread, going through all of these stories of all of these people,

Unknown Speaker 5:45

was that, even in the midst of the darkness, even in the midst of the mass, even in the midst of the hard times, even in the midst of loss,

Unknown Speaker 6:00

they were able to find something to be grateful for. And it wasn't always something big. Sometimes it's just, I'm grateful to be alive today. And sometimes that's all it is.

Unknown Speaker 6:19

There's a cat fight happening outside. And right now, I'm grateful for those cats.

Unknown Speaker 6:29

But it doesn't have to be some grandiose thing, I think that's where we get caught up is we are stuck in a mess. And we're stuck in our heads, and we're stuck in our fear. And we're stuck in our sadness, and we're stuck in our anger. And we're stuck in our frustration and

Unknown Speaker 6:47

and what I want to make sure that is very clear is I'm not saying to dismiss those emotions, I am not saying to dismiss those emotions at all, no, rather, I am saying to recognize them, and even even hold the gratitude for those emotions. Because your sadness is what makes you a human. Your sadness is what makes you be able to experience the happiness and joy because it shows you the duality, it shows you the opposite. And if you don't know what that feels like, then you cannot understand how good the good truly is. So embrace that and embrace that feeling. And hold gratitude for what it shows you how gratitude for what it teaches you and find whatever it is that you can in your life, even if in this moment, it's not something large that you can just focus on and hold gratitude with. And that truly is

Unknown Speaker 8:00

the difference maker. I mean, that truly is one of the biggest lessons that I learned throughout the journey and the process of this book. And, you know, originally, I wanted to compile this book just really to showcase like if you just keep going and keep working and keep pushing forward that that you can do it. And yes, that is a big part of the book action is a huge part of it. But what I discovered in the midst of this process is it was much deeper than just brute force, it was much deeper than just pushing forward. No, there was a different energy attached to it, there was a different energy that every single one of the individuals that contributed to the becoming the big mean the great conquest book, there was a different energy that all of them held.

Unknown Speaker 8:52

And that was an energy of gratitude.

Unknown Speaker 9:00

No finding gratitude.

Unknown Speaker 9:03

In darkness.

Unknown Speaker 9:07

I know it's not an easy thing to do.

Unknown Speaker 9:13

However,

Unknown Speaker 9:16

it does seem to be the difference maker, it does seem to make a massive difference. It does seem to have an influence on on our lives on our happiness levels. I know for me personally, in my experience when I choose to wake up in the morning and focus my intention with intention consciously. Upon gratitude, I have a better day.

Unknown Speaker 9:49

Gratitude is powerful.

Unknown Speaker 9:52

And then just this other weekend, I had the pleasure of having one of my amazing clients out

Unknown Speaker:

With my partner Trey and, and we, we dove into this concept again. And he has been through so much in his life, so many things, I could have stopped him so many things that nobody would have lined him if they did stop him.

Unknown Speaker:

And you know what his number one core value was gratitude. Number one, first thank you guys, every single morning, wake up

Unknown Speaker:

and be grateful align his energy and his vibration of gratitude.

Unknown Speaker:

There is power. In this practice,

Unknown Speaker:

there's power in gratitude.

Unknown Speaker:

So

Unknown Speaker:

I really want you to try it out for yourself, I want you to experience this power because now, like I have always known, I've always known in the power of gratitude. But after this experience after like truly diving deep with all of these people, after diving deep with my own personal mentor, someone who I had whose work has influenced me for the past 10 years of my life, you know, Sharon lechter, after being able to speak with her, and really how this whole thing even manifested, I just have so much gratitude for this whole experience.

Unknown Speaker:

And what I learned was that I am not alone in gratitude being a difference maker, I am not alone at all. In fact, every single one of the other authors with me

Unknown Speaker:

in this journey, and the other contributors to this book, found the power and gratitude.

Unknown Speaker:

Just think, right now have three things, three things from this day that you're grateful for.

Unknown Speaker:

And I want you to continue this practice and I just want you to think each day of three things. That's it. If you think of more, that's awesome too. But don't, you know, stress yourself out, I just want you to start this practice consistently and persistently each and every day. Allow yourself some time to focus your attention to quiet your mind. And focus in and hone in on gratitude. Three things that you're grateful for, for this day.

Unknown Speaker:

I'll talk to you guys next time.
